Video blog: Mazak laser cutter
Throughout the year, I’ll be posting short videos about the various pieces of metal fabrication equipment used at bo-mar industries. This week’s video is about the advantages and disadvantages of the 2500 watt Mazak laser cutter. We have lasers from 1000 watts up to 4000 watts at bo-mar industries. Each has a purpose in our shop. This is a 2500 watt Mazak laser. The nice thing about it is that it’s not overly powerful. They don’t use a lot of energy. The higher wattage lasers use more energy – but if you don’t need that energy it’s expensive. So we go with the smaller wattage whenever possible because it makes it a cheaper piece to operate.
The nice thing about the laser cutter is you can cut all types of materials. You can cut plastic, you can cut steel, you can cut wood. It’s a really versatile piece of equipment – it doesn’t have many limitations.
This particular machine is for thicknesses up to 5/8 of an inch. Anything above that and we go to the water jet. That’s where the water jet really shines – for materials thicker than 5/8 of an inch.
